The 2020 Alameda Firefighters Toy Program (AFTP) is struggling with the many issues that have impacted all our lives because of COVID-19. In past years, the AFTP collected and distributed toys and gift cards to more than 800 Alameda children and youth, and we remain committed to assuring that Alameda’s lowest income families can provide holiday toys and gifts for their children.

To do that we need your help with cash contributions to the AFTP through our GoFundMe campaign or by mailing a check made out to the Alameda Firefighters Toy Program to AFTP, P.O. Box 6523, Alameda, CA 94501.

Health and safety protocols necessitated by COVID-19 make it impossible for us to  collect, sort, and distribute toys donated from the community as we have done in the past. For 2020, we have reinvented the AFTP to include safe distribution of gift cards. Alameda residents who participate in the following programs and services are invited to complete an online registration: Alameda Food Bank, Alameda Head Start, Woodstock Child Development Center, and residents of Alameda Point Collaborative and Alameda Housing Authority.

It is expected that the need this year will exceed the number of children and youth who have participated in previous years. With your help, we plan to serve up to 1,500 children and youth, nearly twice the number we served last year.

In past years, community donated new toys (from bins across the island) were distributed to children 12 and under and gift cards were only distributed to youth 13 to 17. In order to provide gift cards to all 1,500 children and youth this year, AFTP needs your cash donations rather than toys. Many organizations have already stepped up and donated to the 2020 AFTP. We thank the Alameda Community Fund, The Rollins Family Foundation, Rotary Club of Alameda, Bank of Marin, Christ Episcopal Church, Alameda Police Foundation, Kiwanis Club of Alameda, Poppy Bank, and ACI for their substantial support of the 2020 program. Thanks to their generosity, we on our way to meet our goal of providing for 1,500 of Alameda’s children most in need.

We appreciate the extensive community support we have seen in previous years and want to again encourage our community to donate to the AFTP through our GoFundMe campaign or by mailing a check made out to the Alameda Firefighters Toy Program to AFTP, P.O. Box 6523, Alameda, CA 94501.
