Street Repairs on Portions of Otis Drive and Pacific Avenue to Commence

The City of Alameda was awarded One Bay Area Grant (OBAG) funding for street repairs to portions of Otis Drive (from Park Street to Broadway) and Pacific Avenue (from Main Street to Fourth Street). The project will begin mid-June and is estimated to be completed by late October. Construction work hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The repair will take place in several phases, and not all on the same day. Construction will take place in the following order: curb and gutter will be removed and replaced in a few places, areas of poor pavement will be patched, the edges of the street will be ground down, cracks will be filled, the street will be paved, and any traffic markings will be replaced. During construction, motorists will experience minor disruptions in traffic, temporary loss of parking spaces, temporary restricted street access, as well as an increase in noise and dust levels. Bus stop access will be maintained throughout the project.

Asphalt concrete overlayis a mixture of asphalt cement (tar), gravel, and sand that is spread with a paving machine and compacted with rollers. For streets that require an overlay, the contractor will make best efforts to maintain one lane of traffic available in each direction. However, site conditions may require that only one lane is available for both directions. In this case, flag persons will be used to control traffic and delays will occur. It is possible that on-street parking will be removed for up to one week during construction hours. The following streets have been identified for asphalt concrete overlay work:

STREET

FROM

TO

Otis Drive

Park Street

Broadway

Pacific Avenue

Fourth Street

Main Street

The contractor will post ‘No Parking’ signs 72 hours in advance of the planned work to inform residents regarding construction dates and parking restrictions.

Finally, additional red curb may be painted at intersections along Otis Drive, and Pacific Avenue. The City Council has directed staff to prioritize safety at all intersections along all collector and arterial streets by prohibiting parking in the vicinity of intersection. This “daylighting” of the intersection will improve visibility for pedestrians and vehicles and has been shown to improve safety.

The City appreciates your cooperation and patience and apologizes for any inconvenience this project may cause. Questions or information about the project should be directed to Trung Nguyen at 510-747-7900. The project is primarily funded by One Bay Area Grant (OBAG) and Alameda County Measure B, Local Street and Roads funds.
