The Alameda Police Department is asking retailers to be on high alert following a disturbing trend in organized retail thefts. In the past week, businesses in cities throughout the Bay Area have fallen victim to what appears to be highly planned and coordinated retail thefts. In several video clips circulating online and on local news outlets, large groups arrive in vehicle caravans with obstructed license plates. The suspects attempt to conceal their identities and then force their way into the businesses before taking off in waiting cars.

On Sunday evening and early Monday morning, two Alameda businesses were on the receiving end of these organized retail thefts. Due to security measures put in place by one of the retailers, the thieves were unsuccessful at stealing merchandise. At a separate location, the thieves managed to get in and take several items before being interrupted by arriving Alameda Police officers.

Alameda Police investigators are reviewing surveillance videos to identify the suspects responsible for these brazen acts. We are asking businesses to take the following measures to protect their property:
• Consider installing a shatterproof window film.
• Install motion-sensor cameras that can notify you directly inside of your business. Should anyone gain entry after hours, you can immediately monitor this situation and notify the police.
• Remove high-value items from the store floor and secure the items in a secured backroom or safe.
• Install glass break alarms.

Please do not attempt to intervene while these crimes are taking place. Your safety is of the utmost importance. Here’s what you can do: Be a good witness and contact the local authorities right away, provide as many details as possible about personal characteristics, clothing, and/or getaway vehicles. The City of Alameda is working collaboratively with outside agencies to capture the suspects.
