City of Alameda Introduces New Fleet of Electric Vehicles

The City of Alameda’s Public Works Department has purchased five new electric vehicles (EVs) and installed three EV charging stations at its Alameda Point facility, marking a major milestone in the City’s coordinated campaign to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

The five 2019 Nissan Leaf electric cars replace the department’s gas-powered pool cars, most of which were 1990s sedans. While the level 2 charging stations and zero-emission vehicles will be used solely by City staff, Public Works plans to increase the number of charging stations in public parking lots in the next year or so. To view a list of public charging stations currently available in Alameda, go to Alameda Municipal Power’s website at www.alamedamp.com.

The new vehicles and charging stations were funded through the City’s Fleet Replacement Fund. In addition, Public Works received a $9,000 rebate from Alameda Municipal Power’s commercial charging station rebate program.

The new EVs will save money on maintenance and gasoline costs, lowering the City’s overall fleet operation expenses. The City’s fleet of nearly 300 vehicles and equipment is maintained by Alameda Fleet Services, a unit of Public Works.
