March 16, 2020 Statement from Alameda Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft

Today, the Public Health Officer of Alameda County, along with six other Bay Area Public Health Officers, issued a joint Shelter In Place Order in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. We are being asked to remain in our residences starting at midnight tonight and continuing until April 7, at which time the situation will be reassessed.

The scientific evidence shows that at this stage of the emergency, it is essential to slow virus transmission as much as possible to protect the most vulnerable members of our community and prevent the health care system from being overwhelmed. All modes of travel are prohibited except that which is necessary to accomplish essential activities, where social distancing of at least six-feet can be maintained.

For community members who are not at high risk of illness, you have a tremendous role to play in helping slow the spread of this disease. We know you have questions and the City of Alameda will be posting more information later today regarding essential services that will continue to operate, including government services and essential businesses like groceries stores, the food bank, pharmacies, hardware stores, and banks.

All of our updates are posted in one place, at www.alamedaca.gov/alerts. The time to act is now to decrease the reach of this pandemic and slow the spread of COVID-19. Thank you for your cooperation in complying with this order.
