Lawyers in the Library Service at the Alameda Free Library

Have a question about an employment problem? Need help with a landlord/tenant matter? Trying to settle a family member’s estate? Check out the Lawyers in the Library program at the Alameda Free Library.

The Lawyers in the Library Program is a countywide service offered by Legal Access Alameda, the pro bono arm of the Alameda County Bar Association. It is staffed by volunteer attorneys and hosted by local libraries. Volunteers provide free brief individual consultations and referrals on a wide variety of issues including landlord tenant disputes, probate matters, employment problems, and other general consumer issues. Unlike many volunteer legal service programs, patrons need not meet specific income eligibility requirements, nor do volunteers form attorney-client relationships with those they help.

The West End Library hosts the program on the first Monday of the month and the Main Library hosts it on the third Tuesday of the month. It runs from 6:00 to 8:00 pm with sign-ups beginning at 5:30 pm and order of consultation determined by lottery. Staff recommends calling the afternoon of the program to confirm the availability of an attorney.

The West End Library is located at 788 Santa Clara Avenue in Alameda and is served by AC Transit routes 20, 51A, 96, O, and W. The Main Library is located at 1550 Oak Street and is served by AC Transit routes 21 and 51A. Both libraries are wheelchair accessible and have bicycle parking racks. For more information on this and other library programs, visit www.alamedafree.org/Events-directory/Calendar or contact the West End Library at 510-747-7767 or the Main Library at 510-747-7713.
