Grand Opening Celebration of the Cross Alameda Trail
Main Street to Jean Sweeney Open Space Park

Join us as we celebrate the completion of the Cross Alameda Trail (CAT) along Ralph Appezzato Memorial Parkway (RAMP) and Atlantic Avenue, between Main Street and Constitution Way. This long-awaited 0.9 mile segment of the Cross Alameda Trail will connect to Jean Sweeney Open Space Park, creating 1.5 continuous miles of separated walking and bicycling trails.

WHAT: Grand Opening Celebration of the Cross Alameda Trail
WHEN: Saturday, February 29, 2020, 10:00am - 12noon
WHERE: The new plaza at Webster & RAMP (adjacent to College of Alameda at the gateway to historic Webster Street)

Event Highlights: Family-friendly activities, inaugural community walk/roll/march and group photo at 10:15am, a performance by The Sting! Alameda High’s Marching Band, bike safety class, games and prizes, and more.

Project Features: Safe, protected access for people walking and rolling, two landscaped plazas, seating, bike racks and lockers, new mid-block crossing of Atlantic between Webster and Constitution, signal improvements, and more.

Project Background: The City of Alameda’s Cross Alameda Trail is envisioned as a premiere cross-town, low-stress four-mile bicycling and walking corridor that will connect the west side of the island to the east, from the Seaplane Lagoon Ferry Terminal at Alameda Point to the Miller-Sweeney (Fruitvale) Bridge. The CAT is being built in segments. The Jean Sweeney Park segment (0.6 miles) between Constitution Way and Sherman Street opened in December 2018. The next section to be completed later this year is the westernmost segment, connecting Main Street to the new Seaplane Lagoon Ferry Terminal.

The CAT is a 29 year-old idea being materialized – a game changer for Alameda that will make our streets safer and less congested. This $7.1 million project is funded by the Federal Transit Administration, Alameda County Transportation Commission and Measures B and BB transportation sales tax funds, City of Alameda Community Development Block Grant funds, Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s Transportation Fund for Clean Air, and Transportation Development Act Article III funds. Multiple local City funding sources were also used, including Citywide developer fees, the Construction Improvement Tax, and General Fund dollars.

In the event of rain, this event will take place on March 14.
