City launches independent investigation into the in-custody death of Mario Gonzalez

The City of Alameda has hired Louise Renne, founding partner of Renne Public Law Group, to conduct an independent investigation into the in-custody death of Mario Gonzalez.

The City is committed to full transparency and accountability in the tragic death of Mario Gonzalez. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his loved ones. This outside investigation will provide an independent analysis into what may have occurred the day Mr. Gonzalez tragically lost his life.

Ms. Renne leads the firm’s public interest litigation and frequently conducts impartial investigations for local public agencies. Previously, Ms. Renne served for 16 years as the elected City Attorney for the City and County of San Francisco. She has also served as General Counsel for the San Francisco Unified School District, was a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for 8 years, was the California Deputy Attorney General for 11 years, and is a former President of the San Francisco Police Commission.

This independent investigation being conducted on behalf of the City of Alameda is in addition to a criminal investigation being conducted by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office and a separate investigation being conducted by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.

The three officers who were involved in the incident with Mr. Gonzales have been placed on paid administration leave.

The City will make Body Worn Camera footage publically available on our website as soon as the officers who were involved have been interviewed by the two outside agencies conducting investigations. This will help ensure the integrity of the investigations. The video footage is expected to be posted next week.
