On June 19, around 1:40 pm, the Alameda Police Department Communications Center received multiple calls regarding a driver blocking the Bay Farm Island Bridge. Upon arrival, officers found that the driver had exited their vehicle and was standing on the ledge of the bridge.

Recognizing the urgency of this situation, officers immediately requested assistance from the CARE Team and the East Bay Regional Park District Police Department’s air support team. Despite the rapid response by the CARE Team, the individual entered the water. Officers deployed life rings and entered the water to effect a rescue and bring them to shore. Once out of the water, APD officers and Alameda Fire Department personnel began rendering aid. The individual was transported to a local hospital but they did not survive.

Out of respect for the family who is grieving, we are not releasing any additional information.
