Event descriptions – ongoing events:

Teen Advisory Board: Do you wish the library would do more events and programs that you’re interested in? Have you been anxiously awaiting a new book and you want the library to buy it? Do you need an impressive membership to put on your applications and resumes? Join the Teen Advisory Board (TAB) to let the library know what you’re interested in. The Teen Advisory Board is your chance to make a difference in the library for yourself and other teens in Alameda. Members of the Teen Advisory Board will plan be involved in planning Teen programs and choose teen events. Teen Advisory Board members will earn community service hours for every meeting and event that they participate in. Food will be provided.

Teen Book Club: Teen book club members choose what we read each month and every book club member gets a free copy of the book to keep. This month’s book title is This Was Our Pact by Ryan Andrews. All teens, ages 13 to 18, are invited to join the book group.

Lawyers in the Library: The Lawyers in the Library program provides free 15 minute consultations with a volunteer attorney who will provide guidance on legal matters. Examples of areas covered include landlord/tenant disputes, probate matters, employment problems and other general consumer issues. Please see online calendar for dates and locations.

Alameda Library Book Club: The Alameda Library Book Club meets every 2nd Monday at the Alameda Free Library. Everyone is welcome to participate.

Alameda Great Books Club: Everyone is welcome! This book group meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Family Study Room, at the Main Library.

MAC User Group: Want to learn more about Apple technologies? User groups offer members the chance to become friends with other Apple product users, get questions answered, and have a lot of fun. Open to everyone, from first-time computer users to experts - from every profession, background and age.

Alameda Library Writers’ Group: This group is open to all adult writers looking for a space to work and an opportunity to connect and share with other writers. Whatever your genre - you are welcome to join the group. Bring your ideas and laptop (or pencil and paper) and start writing. Please enter quietly. Sharing at the end for those interested.

  • Gardening 101: Saturday, February 8, 2020, 2:00 PM. Learn how easy and fun gardening can be! Join Lori to learn the basics to be a successful first time gardener. Topics will include: deciphering the terminology, plants 101, healthy soil building, transplanting and plant choice by season, seeds vs. starts, non-toxic pest control, reuse in the garden, and tips and tricks.

 

  • Celebrate Black History Month at Alameda Free Library!
  • All Your Favorite Music is (Probably) Black: Saturday, February 1, 2020, 2:00 PM. Join us for a humorous, highly immersive, and historically accurate hour that uncovers the African-American roots of popular music genres that appear to be free of African-Americans. Utilizing a rich audiovisual presentation, Mark Montgomery French reveals the sonic secrets behind African-Americans’ cultural invisibility within the musical categories they helped define.
  • Black Youth: Exploring the Road to Success: Sunday, February 2, 2020, 2:00 PM. Celebrate Black History Month with a panel discussion exploring the effects of racism on young people. Kiki Devoramonifa returns to moderate this year's panel. Panelists will include: Oral Lee Brown, Michelle McAfee, and Ron Whittaker. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Alameda Free Library.
  • Alameda Free Library Film Series: Monday, February 3, 2020, 5:30 PM. Jeff Giordano will screen his most recent film, THE GOD GIVEN TALENT: THE CREATIVE LIFE OF CHARLES CURTIS BLACKWELL, followed by a Q & A.  In this 70-minute documentary, Oakland poet, painter, playwright and teacher Charles Curtis Blackwell takes us on an intimate journey into his past and present. From a challenging upbringing in California and Mississippi, to his current creative life, this film follows the steps of the artist as he discusses love, art, and the influence of his heroes, Maya Angelou, Woodie Guthrie and Martin Luther King Jr., among others.
  • Art Docent Talk: Soul of a Nation: Art in the age of Black Power 1963-1983: Monday, February 10, 2020, 6:30 PM. Come attend a presentation on the internationally acclaimed exhibition celebrating art made by Black artists during two pivotal decades when issues of race and identity dominated and defined both public and private discourse. This exhibit at the deYoung includes a focus on Bay Area artists whose work promoted cultural pride, empowerment, and political and social activism. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Alameda Free Library.
  • Fourth Annual Alameda Authors Series: Jeneé Darden: Wednesday, February 12, 2020, 6:30 PM. Award-winning journalist and author Jeneé Darden will speak about her book Where a Purple Rose Blooms. This book is a collection of Poetry and essays that reflect the writer's journey through Black womanhood. Sponsored by the Alameda Branch of AAUW and Friends of the Alameda Free Library.
  • Thoughtful Movie Tuesdays: Fences: Tuesday, February 18, 2020, 5:15 PM. Join us on the 3rd Tuesday night of the month to view a movie that is sure to inspire contemplation. This month's Academy Award nominated film is a powerful drama with themes of race, masculinity, family, and hope.

  • Pom Pom Crafts: Thursday, February 13, 2020, 3:30 PM. Learn to make yarn pom poms to use on bookmarks, keychains, and more! We'll supply all the supplies and ideas. Once you learn the art of pom pom-making, you can add them to anything! For teens.

 

  • The Good Place Marathon for Teens: Thursday, February 20, 2020, 1:00 PM – 4:30 PM. Everything is fine! Eat snacks and marathon NBC hit show, The Good Place. We'll start from the first episode and enjoy themed snacks as we watch.

 

  • Breakout Box Challenge: Tuesday, February 25, 2020, 3:30 PM. Can you solve the clues and unlock the box in time?
