Alameda City Attorney’s Office joins Alameda County District Attorney’s Office

in handling misdemeanor prosecutions

In February 2020, prosecuting attorneys from the Alameda City Attorney’s Office, in coordination with the District Attorney’s Office, began staffing Alameda County criminal courts and handling misdemeanor prosecutions for certain crimes that occur within the City of Alameda.

On September 3, 2019, the Alameda City Council unanimously directed the City Attorney’s Office to create a local prosecution unit to handle certain misdemeanor crimes that occur in the City of Alameda. Since then, the City Attorney’s Office has worked closely with the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office to create this program. Through strong support from the City Council, the District Attorney, and the Alameda Chief of Police, this program launched in February 2020. City Prosecutors have since filed more than two dozen cases originating within the City of Alameda, ranging from theft, vandalism, to disturbing the peace.

“I want to thank the Council for its visionary support, and both the District Attorney and the Police Chief for their support and collegiality in implementing this unique program in the Bay Area,” said City Attorney Yibin Shen. “We hope that through our cooperative efforts, we can further enhance the safety and quality of life for all persons who live, work, and play in the City of Alameda.”

“I look forward to working with City Prosecutors to focus on issues that directly impact public safety and the efficiency of the police department in Alameda,” said Chief of Police Paul Rolleri. “I applaud City Attorney Yibin Shen for his advocacy and effort to improve public safety outcomes in our community.”
