Alameda’s Annual Mini Maker Faire Showcases Innovation, Creativity, and Fun

Its official – the lineup of makers at this year’s Alameda Mini Maker Faire is incredible! On August 11, 2019, prepare to be surprised and delighted by more than 75 exhibits, including:

  • Making a Taiko Drum: Learn how to build and stretch a traditional Taiko drum, followed by a live drumming demonstration.

  • Nerdy Derby: Build your own mini-derby car and race on a custom-built track.

  • Make it, Wear it: Use electronics and 3D printing to make interactive light-up clothing and costumes.

  • Tinker Bus & the Little Local: Based on Alameda’s treasured coffee shop “The Local,” kids will tinker and train like baristas through hands-on activities at this pop-up interactive museum experience.

  • Azoth Pyramid: If you've ever tried to meditate and couldn't, have a seat in the AEthernaut chair and take a 5-minute trip through inner space-time to experience the flavor of a meditative state.

  • Life Size Operation: Try your hand at this 6 foot tall, fully functioning Operation game. Keep a steady hand or you will sound the buzzer and light up the patient’s nose.

  • Burning Man Art: Check out the Unnecessarily High Five, an interactive art piece that encourages participants of all ages to give the highest five they can; Let U.S. Prey, a 15 foot wide eagle made from pennies, nickels, and dimes built by a volunteer team who put in hundreds of hours; and Shelly the Hermit Crab, a much larger than life animatronic crustacean.

Want a more in-depth experience? Check out one of our workshops throughout the day, sponsored by Alameda Point Partners. Sign-ups are available at: www.alameda.makerfaire.com/workshop-schedule. Here are a few highlights:

  • Make a light-up circuit: Learn how to make a simple light up circuit using copper tape, an LED, and a battery.

  • How stop motion puppets are made: Learn the magic of animation with stop motion puppets from Victoria Rose, the puppet maker behind Coraline and other feature films.

  • Light-up superhero cosplay: Like costumes and cosplay? Learn to make your own light-up superhero bracer out of EVA foam, conductive tape, and LEDs.
