2019 California Coastal Cleanup Day

The City of Alameda Public Works Department, in collaboration with the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD), is sponsoring Alameda Coastal Cleanup Day Saturday, September 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon, at Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach. This annual event provides city residents and visitors the opportunity to improve the appearance of our coastline by removing trash, litter, and debris from the City’s beaches and shoreline.

Volunteers will meet at the east end of Crown Beach at Shore Line Drive and Park Street, or west end at Shore Line Drive and Westline Drive, and pick up litter along the beach adjacent to Shore Line Drive between Park Street and Westline Drive. No training or experience is necessary but volunteers are asked to reduce plastic waste and bring a refillable water bottle, bucket or reusable bag (for trash collection), and work gloves. For safety reasons, wear closed-toe shoes, weather-appropriate layered clothing, and wear a hat and apply sunscreen. Volunteers under the age of 18 who are accompanied by an adult are welcome. Water and light snacks will be provided. The City encourages all participants to walk, bike, carpool, or take public transportation to this event.

Event registration will occur the day of the event, with sign in tables located on the beach near Shore Line Drive and Park Street, or at Shore Line Drive and Westline Drive beginning at 8:30 a.m.

In addition to the main site at Crown Memorial Beach, several marinas will host individual California Coastal Cleanup events beginning at 9:00 a.m. If you would like to join one of the marina clean-up events, please call the marina directly prior to the day of the event to reserve a spot:.
• Aeolian Yacht Club (510-523-2586)
• Ballena Isle Marina/ Yacht Club (510-523-5528)
• Grand Marina  (510-865-1200)
• Oakland Yacht Club (510-522-6868)

This is the second Coastal Cleanup Day since the Alameda’s Disposable Food Service Ware Reduction Law went into effect in January 2018. Single use plastics and litter such as food wrappers, plastic straws, beverage containers, and smoking-related materials comprise approximately 80% of the debris found in past Coastal Cleanup Day events, and represent the majority of trash found in the watershed and along the shoreline. To learn more about the Disposable Food Service Ware Reduction Law, please visit alamedaca.gov/public-works/integrated-waste-program.

Last year, over 400 Alameda residents and volunteers joined together to clean up over 10 miles of City beaches and shoreline and removed over a ton of debris that otherwise would have harmed the marine ecosystem. Statewide, over 70,000 volunteers participated and removed over 800,000 pounds of trash and recycling from California shorelines and waterways in 2018. Coastal Cleanup day occurs annually on the 3rd Saturday of September. Coastal Cleanup Day is a great way for families, students, service groups, residents and neighbors to join together, take care of the fragile marine environment, show community support for shared natural resources, and have fun.
