The City of Alameda has long been a leader in recycling and composting, where residents and businesses are careful to sort their discards into the correct containers, effectively diverting 75% of all waste from the landfill.
Businesses and multifamily properties of 5 units or more must have adequate recycling and composting service as of July 1, 2014. Enforcement of this ordinance begins January 1, 2015. The City of Alameda is a fully opted-in jurisdiction of the County's Mandatory Recycling Ordinance.
