School Crossing Guards are a vital function of the Alameda Police Department (APD). Crossing Guards have the responsibility of safeguarding children at designated intersections prior to and at the end of the school day. It is not the primary responsibility of School Crossing Guards to direct traffic. The primary responsibility of Crossing Guards is to use safe gaps in traffic, or when necessary, to create safe gaps to help the children cross the streets safely. School Crossing Guards receive training specific to their duties and after training, the Crossing Guard is assigned to a post. The Crossing Guard Program is overseen by APD's Traffic Unit.
