The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) has awarded the City of Alameda a $200,000 grant to prepare a detailed plan for the Waterfront Town Center area at Alameda Point, a 918-acre portion of the former Naval Air Station Alameda (NAS Alameda). The Waterfront Town Center, along the waterfront at Seaplane Lagoon, will be the hub of Alameda Point with a mix of residential, open space, and commercial uses - all near public transit.
The Waterfront Town Center Plan will contain detailed land use, design, transportation, infrastructure and financing information, including design guidelines and a form-based code. It will build on rezoning efforts for Alameda Point currently being undertaken by the City. The Plan will also guide future growth with clear rules, development standards, and a streamlined approval process.
“We are grateful that MTC has selected Alameda Point,” said Mayor Marie Gilmore. “This grant is the beginning of our partnership with MTC to make sure Alameda Point integrates well with regional transportation needs,” she said. Alameda Point is expected to generate approximately 6,000 new jobs and more than one thousand housing units at build out.
“This Plan for our Waterfront Town Center area will lay the groundwork for the City to take advantage of key retail, restaurant, maritime, commercial, and housing opportunities at the heart of Alameda Point,” said City Manager John Russo.
